Toxicity: Ionic Liquids
The combination of organic chemistry with inorganic chemistry results in numerous possible combinations of cations and anions. As a "label" for a class of materials, the term "green" or "green solvent" is misleading and rather an inadmissible generalization: certain ionic liquids are toxic, others are even difficult to degrade, but some can even be used as medicines. Moreover, they are by no means limited to use as solvents.
A number of ionic liquids have already been tested for toxicity, and we will be happy to tell you which ones. However, the vast majority have so far only been produced on a laboratory or pilot scale and have therefore not yet had to be fully tested in Europe. However, thanks to our many years of experience, we are now able to assess very precisely which materials pose which risks. In the laboratory, most ionic liquids can generally be handled without any problems, as they cannot be inhaled. However, care must be taken to wear gloves, a lab coat and protective goggles in the laboratory to rule out dermal absorption.
We will also be happy to advise you on the safe handling of ionic liquids!
Once the technical performance of an ionic liquid has been demonstrated under laboratory conditions, but has not yet been fully tested, we will take care of the rest and initiate all the necessary tests.
