Ionic Liquids as Electrolytes

Ionic liquids possess a number of chemical and physical properties that make it interesting to employ them as electrolytes in different devices. The unique combination of

  • conductivity  that enables transport of charge,
  • non-volatility,
  • non-flammability that reduces the risk of ignition and
  • wide electrochemical window that allows stability towards oxidation and reduction processes

for some ionic liquids makes them prominent candidates for electrolytes in batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, or dye-sensitized solar cells. It also allows electrochemical deposition of metals that are impossible to approach in aqueous solutions and the use of ionic liquids in different sensor systems.

In addition to above-mentioned superiorities, there are also application specific advantages. If you want to learn more about them, please check the links at the bottom of the page. If you have inquiries on this topic, please feel free to contact us.
